2018-19 Scholarship Recipients

Incoming Ohio State students


Nicholas Lenyo (Huron)
Nick will be graduating as valedictorian of Huron High School. Nick plans to continue his amazing life journey at Ohio State by becoming a physician and scientist searching for a cure for cancer. Nick is a member of Student Council, Academic Challenge, Interact, National Honor Society and has participated in football and baseball at Huron. In addition to the $1000 scholarship that each scholar will receive from our Erie County Alumni Club, Nick will receive an additional $600 Alumni Scholar award from Ohio State in recognition of him being our scholarship committee’s highest ranked applicant.


Sarah Blevins (Huron)
Sarah will graduate as class president and ranked number two of all students at Huron High School. She has earned four varsity letters in both track and cross country and was a member of homecoming court last fall. Sarah plans to eventually attend medical school at Ohio State.


Carlie Shover (Edison)
Carlie will graduate from Edison High School before heading to Columbus to major in biology on a pre-med track at Ohio State. Carlie was a team captain, all-conference selection, and state qualifier in both cross country and track. She is also a member of the basketball team, National Honor Society, and Math, Key, Spanish and Interact clubs.


Casey Van Cauwenbergh (Huron)
Casey is ranked third at Huron High School and has earned varsity letters in cross country, basketball and track. He is also active in Team Leadership Corps and National Honor Society. Casey will be studying aerospace engineering at Ohio State on his way to space with NASA.


Madison Leffler (Perkins)
Madison will graduate rankin #1 at Perkins High School where she is also the senior class secretary, a member of the Mock Trial team and a scholar athlete in track, cheer and cross country. Madison will be studying health sciences with the goal of becoming an anesthesiologist.


Madison Weyer (St. Mary CC)
Madison currently attends St. Mary Central Catholic where she is a member of the varsity tennis and cheer teams. She is treasurer of the National Honor Society and a Senior Retreat Leader. After studying biology and psychology at Ohio State, Madison plans to attend medical school.


Dawson Varvola (Sandusky)
After graduating from Sandusky High School, Dawson will be preparing for law school while combining his passions for history and music. At SHS, he ranked third in a class of 197 students while serving as the senior class treasurer, president of the choir and band secretary.


Riley Lowe (Vermilion)
Riley will be graduating from Vermilion High School where he was a captain of the football team, a member of Academic Challenge, Student Council, and participated in Buckeye Boys State. At Ohio State, Riley will be studying finance in the Fisher College of Business.


Timothy Hinton (Sandusky)
Tim is receiving the Orlando Pace Scholarship awarded to a graduate of Sandusky High School. He is a member of the varsity soccer team, National Honor Society, the Gentlemen’s Club and Student Council. At Ohio State, Tim plans to become a psychiatrist to mentor troubled youth.


Hayden Petee (Huron)
At Huron High School, Hayden is a four-year varsity letter winner in soccer and earned first team All-Ohio recognition last fall. She is currently active with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Teen Leadership Corps and National Honor Society. Hayden plans to follow a pre-med track at Ohio State.

Special Scholarship Recognition

Katelyn Hopper (Huron)
Each year, The Ohio State University awards a Land Grant Scholarship to one student from each of the 88 counties in Ohio based on their demonstration of academic merit and financial need. The Ohio State Land Grant Scholarship covers all expenses to attend Ohio State including tuition, room and board, and books. This year Ohio State has selected Katelyn Hopper from Huron High School.

Lisa Gies (2016 graduate of Huron)
Lisa maintains a 3.88 GPA while majoring in psychology with a neuroscience minor. She plans to attend graduate school to become a pediatric neuro-psychologist. Currently, she is a psychology department ambassador, active with Special Olympics and Autism Speaks and serves as a teaching assistant for the Psychology 100 course.


Abbey Pitts (2016 graduate of Perkins)
Abbey has earned a 3.89 GPA as a Citizenship Scholar in the Fisher College of Business. She is also a counselor supporting kids whose parents have been affected by cancer, a BuckeyeThon volunteer and fitness monitor at the Ohio State Recreation Center. Abbey is receiving our Croteau Scholarship, which is awarded to an upperclassman majoring in business.


Jacob Caponi (2016 graduate of Perkins)
Jacob is now a sophomore studying neuroscience at Ohio State where plans to focus on addictive behaviors and health disparities. He is currently an International Affairs Scholar, a Social and Behavioral Sciences research assistant and a resident advisor for Smith-Steeb Hall.

Ben Gastier (2016 graduate of Edison)
Ben is a biology major preparing to attend medical school to study sports medicine. He is active on campus, participating in several intramural sports programs and maintains an outstanding GPA of 3.93.

Abigail Dresser (2016 graduate of Perkins)
Abigail is majoring in psychology at Ohio State. Her future plans include graduate school to become a school psychologist helping troubled youth. At Ohio State, Abbey is active with BuckeyeThon, Life Sports and has a 3.71 GPA.


Emily Lipstraw (2015 graduate of Perkins)
Emily is heading to Washington D.C. next fall for an internship with the U.S. Department of Education which will compliment her double major of economics and political science. Back in Columbus, she is a tutor for Ohio State student athletes and member of the ODE economics honorary fraternity. Emily maintains a 3.83 GPA.


Kathryn Smith (2016 graduate of Sandusky)
At Ohio State, Kathryn is majoring in Forestry, Fisheries, and Wildlife. She works as a research lab assistant and plans to rehabilitate injured wildlife. She is also active on the Ohio State Club swimming team and works for Dining Services.


Robert Morton (2015 graduate of Edison)
Robert is currently a junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a 3.6 GPA. He is active with Ohio State’s Formula SAE race car competition team and has interned multiple times in the engine research and development department at Honda Americas. Robert is receiving our Hancock Engineering Scholarship.
